Monster tornado rips apart Oklahoma; at least 91 dead

by
WASHINGTON: The death toll from a massive tornado that swept through a US suburb of Oklahoma City has risen to 91, including at least 20 children, an official told CNN early Tuesday.

Amy Elliott, of the state medical examiner's office, said in a televised interview that 40 more bodies had been recovered since an earlier toll of 51, after the massive twister flattened several suburban blocks and two schools.

Stunned weather forecasters reported a two-mile (three-kilometer) wide swath of vicious winds and television news helicopters tracked a dark funnel plowing through densely-packed suburbs.

"We've had a massive tornado, a huge one that has passed through this community," Oklahoma's Governor Mary Fallin told a news conference.

"We know there are a lot of injuries. We know we've lost a tremendous amount of structures throughout this community and throughout the state," she said, as the Moore police chief urged people to leave the area.

"There are a lot of safety issues, gas lines, power lines, things of that nature, that we have to take into consideration and there's just not much else that can be done there at this time," police chief Jerry Sillings said.

Reporters for local broadcaster KFOR-TV saw children as young as nine being pulled out of the Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, a residential community of 55,000 just south of Oklahoma's state capital.

Anxious parents were being kept at a distance while search-and-rescue workers scrambled to free the students.

A second elementary school, Briarwood, was also hit but did not appear to have sustained casualties.

From its news helicopter, KFOR's cameras captured scenes of widespread destruction, with street after street of single-story homes in Moore stripped of their roofs and cars piled atop each other like toys.

Utility lines were down and gas lines exposed, triggering localized fires. The Moore Medical Center was evacuated after it sustained damage, and state authorities called out the National Guard to help rescue efforts.

US President Barack Obama meanwhile declared a "major disaster" in Oklahoma and ordered federal aid to supplement local recovery efforts.

On Twitter, the National Weather Service gave the tornado a preliminary rating of EF-4, indicating that it packed winds of 166 to 200 miles per hour (267-322 km/h) — more severe than a category five hurricane.

In downtown Oklahoma City, tornado sirens went off at least three times and the Interstate 35 highway — a busy north-south artery through the American heartland — was closed to all but emergency vehicles.

In Moore, live images from KFOR showed people wandering among the debris and even a couple of untethered horses from a local stable that somehow managed to survive the punishing storm.

"I had no idea it was coming," said a stable worker, who told how he survived the "unbearably loud" twister by taking cover in one of the stalls.

Monday's tornado followed roughly the same track as a May 1999 twister that killed 44 people, injured hundreds more and destroyed thousands of homes.

Tornadoes frequently touch down on Oklahoma's wide open plains, but Monday's twister struck a populated urban area and raised fears of a high casualty toll.

Because of the hard ground, few homes are built with basements or storm shelters in which residents can take cover.

Oklahoma City lies inside the so-called " Tornado Alley" stretching from South Dakota to central Texas, an area particularly vulnerable to tornadoes.

On Sunday, a powerful storm system churning through the US Midwest spawned tornadoes in Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma, destroying homes and killing at least two people, US media reported.

Fallin had already declared a state of emergency for 16 Oklahoma counties due to the tornado threat on Sunday, and added five more on Monday after the storms hit her capital.

In Washington, a White House official said Obama was getting regular updates and that the Federal Emergency Management Agency ( FEMA) stood ready to provide assistance.

"The administration continues to urge all those in affected or potentially affected areas to follow the direction of state and local officials as this severe weather continues," the official added.

New pill lets botox effects last for 30 per cent longer

by

Ladies, here is a pill that will help you to maintain that young look even months after a botox injection.
Researchers have developed a new pill 'Zytaze', which they claim can make the wrinkle-smoothing effects of Botox injections last for 30 per cent longer.
Cosmetic jabs are used to combat wrinkles, but the downside is that the benefits last for just three months.
A clinical trial of the pill found that 92 per cent of patients taking Zytaze reported Botox treatments lasted for several weeks longer than normal, and also helped the jab to take effect more quickly, the Daily Mail reported.
The new pill contains zinc and an enzyme called phytase which helps the vitamin to be absorbed. A pack of ten costs 45 pounds while zinc supplements cost 8 pounds for 100 tablets.
However, US manufacturer Eden Aesthetics have claimed that just taking a cheaper zinc supplement will not have the same effect.
The pill is unique and can reduce the price of Botox for regular users, they claim.
Zytaze patients have to take two 25 mg pills a day for four days prior to having Botox and on the day they receive the jab.
The findings were published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.

How Twitter can help you find a new job

by
NEW YORK: If you're looking for a new job, you might want to consider using Twitter along with more traditional search tools to market yourself, find open positions, get career advice and network, it has been revealed.

You can begin by highlighting your skills in your Twitter bio, career experts advise, the New York Post reported.

According to reCareered.com President Phil Rosenberg, if you're currently employed and secretly looking for a new job you can create an additional Twitter profile for job-seeking purposes.

Use keywords as you detail your credentials in your bio, so that recruiters and hiring managers can find you, and include a link to an online resume and your e-mail address.

Northwestern University's Career Services website also suggests creating a "Twesume," or a condensed resume of just 140 characters that you can tweet or use as your Twitter bio.

You can also use the background of your Twitter page to showcase your skills, if you work in a creative industry.

You can search using hashtags to find openings or advice.

According to career experts and our own research, the most effective hashtags for job search are #jobs, #hiring#jobhunt#jobsearch#jobtips#jobopening#career and #resume, which you can also attach to your own tweets to help recruiters and hiring managers find you.

Searching using a combination of #jobs and a hashtag specifying the industry or location you'd like to work in is also useful, according to Diane Crompton, the co-author of "Find a Job Through Social Networking."

Oops, Ekta Kapoor did it again

by

Her films might be setting newer trends in the industry but we can’t say the same about Ekta Kapoor’s dressing sense.

On Thursday evening the queen of Bollywood and television made a dazzling entry for a book launch. But like always it was Ekta’s wardrobe that caught the attention of everyone present at the event.

“She might be unbeatable in showbiz but her wardrobe needs a change desperately,” says an industry source. The big shot producer wore a shirt that revealed a little more that what we are guessing she intended to show off.

“She has always been careless about what she wears. This time was no different. Ekta knew that her shirt was a size smaller but she couldn’t have cared less,” says an eyewitness.

Despite being good friends with high profile designers like Manish Malhotra and Shabina Khan, her dressing sense continues to be the talk of the town.

CBSE to provide questions in Telugu

by

The state government responded positively over implementing Neet from 2013 and asked the NTR University of Health Sciences to finalise the modalities of the test.
The NTRUHS registrar, Dr Venugopal Rao, participated in a meeting conducted by CBSE in Delhi last month. The CBSE has agreed to provide Neet questions in Telugu. It has decided to conduct Neet in five cities in AP.
Everything was going smoothly, when the department of medical education asked officials of the higher education to give their opinion whether AP should adopt Neet from 2013 or 2014.
The higher education department opted for 2014, since the fresh batch of 10+2 students, who took admission this year, will prepare accordingly.
Taking this into consideration, the department of medical education has referred the issue again to the state government to take a final decision. The decision has to be taken quickly by the Chief Minister, so that the students are clear on which test they must study for.

India launches 100th space mission successfully

by

India on Sunday successfully launched its 100th space mission with the indigenous PSLV-C21 rocket putting in orbit two foreign satellites.

In a copybook launch, witnessed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ISRO's workhorse PSLV placed in orbit France's SPOT 6 satellite and Japanese spacecraft Proiteres, some 18 minutes after a perfect lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here.

The launch, scheduled for 9.51 am, was delayed by two minutes at the end of the 51-hour countdown. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), on its 22nd flight, soared into an overcast sky at 9.53 am carrying the 720 kg French satellite, the heaviest satellite to be launched by India for a foreign client.

The mission was described as 'a spectacular success' and a milestone by Singh, who keenly watched the entire launch sequence and applauded each stage separation culminating in the placing of the two satellites in orbit.

The launch was a landmark for Indian Space Research Organistion (ISRO) which began its space odyssey on a humble note when it launched the indigenous 'Aryabhatta' on board a Russian rocket on April 19, 1975.

The launch has yet again demonstrated the versatility and robustness of PSLV with the rocket completing its 21st successful mission in a row since its first failed flight in September 1993.

No Indian satellite was onboard the flight which is the third wholly commercial launch undertaken by ISRO for foreign clients.

SPOT-6 is the biggest commercial lift so far since India forayed into the money spinning commercial satellite launch services after 350 kg Agile of Italy put in orbit in 2007 by PSLV. Twelve other foreign commercial satellites launched by ISRO weighed below 300 kg.

Significantly, France's five earlier SPOT satellites were launched by European Araine rocket.

SPOT-6, built by ASTRIUM SAS, a subsidiary of EADS, France, is an earth observation satellite, while the micro satellite Proiteres developed by students and faculty of Osaka Institute of Technology will study Kansai region of Japanese island of Honshu.

Be prepared for education on phones: Ponnala

by

Minister for Information Technology Ponnala Lakshmaiah has predicted that smart phone technology will play an important role in delivery of higher education in the future, so the academia should prepare and mould its teaching methodologies accordingly.
Mr. Lakshmaiah said that with the advent of MIT Open courseware, NPTEL, Khan Academy and others, all the coursework is available over the web.
Educational software and content is available on iPhones and Android platforms and these developments could not be ignored as they would dictate how education was delivered for the coming generations.
The Minister was sharing his views at the inauguration of Indo-Global Education summit in which representatives of educational institutions from over 40 countries were participating.
He said universities and colleges had to differentiate themselves from “Googles and Facebooks” and provide a layer above the knowledge foundation.
This should help students think creatively, be enterprising and know how to utilise the information for their benefit.
Global perspective
He said students should also have global perspective and cross-culture learning was very important.
Emerging markets such as India, Brazil, Russia and China had huge potential for newer business opportunities and foreign students would benefit if they had an Indian component to their university education. In that context, summits like this would help students and educational institutions.
A.P. High Court Judge, Gode Raghuram, felt education must provide employment opportunities and employability was a serious issue that the government had to deal with. S.B. Anumolu, Managing Trustee of the Indus Foundation, and C.D. Arha, former Chief Information Commissioner, spoke.
Education Fair from today
An international educational expo explaining opportunities abroad for Indian students will be held simultaneously at Taj Krishna on September 8 & 9. Entry is free for students and they can get details of educational opportunities abroad, admission criteria and other details from the participating institutions from over 40 countries.
Meanwhile, several Left and democratic organisations staged a protest at the summit venue (Hotel Taj Deccan) against the participation of three Israeli universities.
They raised slogans like ‘End blockade of Palestine’ and ‘No to Israeli universities’. They were taken into custody by the police.
