Health benefits of Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

by
Everyone is familiar with amla or the Indian gooseberry, it is used in a variety of products like sweets, jams, powder, pickles, while some simply like to pluck and eat them.

But are the health benefits of amla overrated? Along with Dr. Jaishree Bhattacharjee, Ayurvedic consultant with Satvikshop, we explore this popular Indian fruit.

Amla is known as a good source of vitamin C, but is that all? What are the other health benefits of the Indian gooseberry? Dr. Jaishree gives us a detailed list, "Amla has loads of benefits. It is a super food of Ayurveda due to its antioxidant property. It has beneficial effects on almost all the systems and organs of body." She explains:

-It controls blood sugar in diabetes

-Lowers cholesterol level

-It is a natural anti ageing agent for skin; nourishes scalp and hair roots and encourages hair growth

-It improves digestion and alleviates constipation

-It improves blood circulation

-It ensures proper functioning of liver.

-It is a strong immunomodulator and protects from the onset of many diseases if taken regularly

-Amla is a good hematinic as it raises hemoglobin level

She also goes on to list out other sources of vitamin C, "There are many good sources of vitamin C beside amla:

-All leafy vegetables like palak, bathua etc.

-All kind of peppers have loads of vit-c

-Fruits like mangoes, pine apple, oranges, kiwi, strawberry, berries, papaya,

-Vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, red cabbage, etc

-Herbs like basil, mint, coriander, rosemary"

You can get these health benefits by including amla and the other vitamin C rich foods in your diet. On the other hand, if fresh produce is a problem, you can invest in some organic amla products.

Watch horror movies to burn calories

by
Watching a scary movie for just 90 minutes could help burn as much as 113 calories, which is close to the amount burned during a half-hour walk and equivalent to a chocolate bar, a University of Westminster study has revealed.

The 1980 psychological thriller 'The Shining' was on the top of the list of calorie-burners, with the average viewer using up a whopping 184 calories.

'Jaws' took the runner-up spot, with viewers burning on average 161 calories, and 'The Exorcist' came third, with 158 calories, the Telegraph reported.

The study measured the total energy expenditure of ten different people as they watched a selection of frightening movies.

Scientists recorded their heart rate, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output - and discovered the number of calories used increased by on average a third during the films.

The research also revealed films featuring moments designed to make viewers jump in terror are the best calorie-burners, as they cause heart rates to soar.

"Each of the ten films tested set pulses racing, sparking an increase in the heart rate of the case studies," the paper quoted Dr Richard Mackenzie, senior lecturer and specialist in cell metabolism and physiology at the University of Westminster, as saying.

"As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline."

"It is this release of fast acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the Basal Metabolic Rate and ultimately burn a higher level of calories," he explained.

Helen Cowley, editor of the movie rental company LOVEFiLM - which commissioned the University of Westminster study - said: "We all know the feeling of wanting to hide behind the sofa or grab a pillow when watching scary or hair raising scenes, but this research suggests that maybe those seeking to burn some calories should keep their eyes on the screen."

The top 10 calorie-burning frightening films were:
1. The Shining: 184 calories
2. Jaws: 161 calories
3. The Exorcist: 158 calories
4. Alien: 152 calories
5. Saw: 133 calories
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street: 118 calories
7. Paranormal Activity: 111 calories
8. The Blair Witch Project: 105 calories
9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 107 calories
10. [Rec]: 101 calories

Sherlyn Chopra to star in Kama Sutra in 3D

by
“Part of the Sexual Revolution is bringing Rationality to Sexuality” says Playboy owner Hugh Hefner; and our Sherlyn Chopra is very much part of this sexual revolution. The model-turned-singer-turned-actress recently tweeted the above-mentioned Hefner quote, and it doesn’t come as a surprise that she is the chosen one to star in Kama Sutra-3D.

Already in the news for being the first Indian to pose for the illustrious adult-magazine Playboy, Sherlyn Chopra is confirmed to be the leading lady of Kama Sutra in 3D by Rupesh Paul. The director already had announced the film when he premiered his maiden Hollywood venture Saint Dracula 3D at the Cannes Film Festival early this year.

Sherlyn Chopra is naturally on cloud nine because now she can boast of a new version of Kamasutra -- an ancient Indian lovemaking treatise well-known in the western world. The critically-acclaimed director Mira Nair also made a film on it, titled Kama Sutra - A Tale Of Love which was controversial in many ways and in the film the director also tried to show a lesbian relationship. Can Sherlyn outdo Indira Verma or Sarita Choudhury, the bold actresses of Kama Sutra - A Tale Of Love?

However, according to Sherlyn Chopra the film is not vulgar, “Kama Sutra is nowhere close to vulgarity. Nudity is not vulgar. It is a form of art and an expression of the mind. I am considered to be a bold personality but I know this film is going to change perceptions.”

Already aware of Nair’s tribulations during the filming of Kama Sutra - A Tale Of Love, director Rupesh Paul has kept his shooting locations a closely-guarded secret. The film will go on the floors by the year-end. Meanwhile, Sherlyn Chopra’s twitter account is bombarded with congratulatory messages. Atta girl!

Now, a glove that turns your hand into a wireless keyboard

by
WASHINGTON: Researchers have designed a new glove that allows your hands to function as a wireless keyboard.

Researchers from the University of Alabama said instead of tapping keys on a keyboard, the user simply touches their thumb to certain points on their fingers which are assigned a letter or other keyboard function.

Conductive thread carries the commands to a matchbox-sized Printed Circuit Board (PCB) affixed to the back of the glove.

The PCB transmits it via Bluetooth, whether it's a computer, a mobile phone, music synthesizer, video game or military device.

Gauntlet works as a touch screen by tapping your fingers to your thumb on a gloved hand.

Four senior engineering students at UAH made the glove their senior design project for a computer engineering class led by Dr B Earl Wells.

The students -- Jiake Liu, Stephen Dond, Douglas Kirby and Chris Heath - are now seeking a patent to market the product.

"It's basically a keyboard on your hand. You, by tapping your thumb on each segment of your fingers, type to the screen basically. And you can do a swiping gesture that would erase it," Lui said.

Gauntlet is an acronym for Generally Accessible Universal Nomadic Tactile Low-power Electronic Typist. That's a lengthy description of what essentially is a glove with a beehive of conductive threads running throughout the fingers and palm.

"There are several applications we can think of right now. The easy one would be as a keyboard for the consumer market," Liu said.

"Also, the medical field for people limited to one hand from a disability. We can also think of military uses, as an entertainment device or used as a musical instrument for digital synthesising," Liu said in a statement.

Dr Emil Jovanov, associate dean for Graduate Education and Research in the UAH College of Engineering, commended the students for their innovation.

"It is a perfect example of how you take an original idea, find your niche and complete the whole idea," Jovanov said.

Chiranjeevi joins Cabinet as MoS with independent charge

by
New Delhi: He cruised up touching the sky in the tinsel town like a powerful rocket, but when Chiranjeevi replaced the engine of cinema with rustic politics, it was not smooth sailing for him. In the end, like any other Indian blockbuster, hero Chiranjeevi emerged the winner by finding himself in the Union
Council of Ministers, which was expanded on Sunday, after spending almost two full years in political hibernation. He was inducted as Minister of State (Independent charge) Tourism.
The superstar, who entertained millions of young men, women, children and old alike through his inimitable style whose mantra only he knows, left his lucrative career to test his fortunes in politics at the age of 53 in 2008. His journey in politics was not a bed of roses but was filled with thorns which the actor, who had not tasted failure at the box office for years together, could not swallow it like he did success.

Learn some 'Kamasutra' if you can

by
Here are some sex resolutions you should make to rekindle the flame.

Learn some Kama Sutra
Given that the world's oldest guide on love, sex and spirituality is our home production, we Indians should be most adept at the subject. Not the case with you? Well, the book will never go out of fashion and relevance. Plus, its sex chapters have often been plucked out and circulated on the internet, books and on DVDs. Apart from positions, it has some useful advice on behavior, kissing and touching as well. So, turn over a new leaf tonight!

Revisit old moves
If you've stopped making certain moves in bed because they've bothered you or your partner, find out exactly why it occurs and get over it. Keep in mind, though, the same goes for him/her. Also, if you think you're too 'grown up' for some moves you used to make with your college flame, a total recall would be good fun!

Make a to-do list
We're not saying stick post-its on the ceiling but you and your partner can set a rough timetable, right? Once a month, once a week, whenever suits you - it is important to make to-do list of styles, fantasies - whatever's fun.

Have more foreplay
Women still complain of insufficient foreplay when it comes to sex. Here's a fact: women who get at least 20 minutes of foreplay are 80 per cent more likely to have an orgasm. Don't let your lover be one in the remaining lot.

Add the funk
Sex has become a mechanical activity for many stressed couples. There's a way out. One of you - whoever's less stressed - can change the way you make love (at least for one night, for starters). Suggestions: Forget the ice cubes cliche, get a bottle of wine instead; play raunchy Hindi numbers, encourage dirty chatter in bed... we hope you get the drift?

Go on an adventurous date
A weekend trip to an exotic resort can just get the fun back into your sex. Sometimes, a break in monotony is just what your brain needs to get energized. Take to mountain-climbing, paragliding or simply walk down the beach. Excitement needn't always be expensive.

Overcome your fears
Is there anything you or your mate want to try but breaks into a cold sweat attempting it? There is nothing as liberating as being terrified of something and overcoming it.

Break one of your taboos
Similarly, if you've imposed any rules or taboos on yourself because of fear, lack of knowledge or social pressure, break it.

Communicate...
... and more regularly. It is perhaps the most crucial resolution for your relationship. It seems basic, but when was the last time you discussed sex with him/her? Speaking up is one of the most important ingredients of a healthy sex life.

Recipe: Cabbage vadas

by

Inspired from South Indian cuisine, cabbage vadas are rich in nutrients, since they are loaded with cabbage, onions, and peas. Flavoured with fresh coriander and chilies, they taste great with green chutney or tomato ketchup and are a perfect tiffin snack.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup urad dal (split black lentils), 1 toughly chopped green chili, 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing), 3/4 cup finely chopped cabbage, 1/2 cup finely chopped onions, 1 tbsp boiled green peas, 1/4 cup finely chopped coriander (dhania), salt to taste, oil for deep-frying.

Method :

-Clean, wash and soak the urad dal in enough water for at least 1 hour. Drain, add the chilies, asafoetida and 1/4th cup of water and blend in a mixer to a smooth paste.

-Add the cabbage, onions, peas, coriander and salt and mix well. Wet your fingers, take some batter and make a hole in the centre using your thumb. Slide the vada gently into the hot oil and deep-fry on a medium flame, till it turns golden brown in colour from all the sides. Repeat with the remaining batter to make 11 more vadas. Drain on absorbent paper.

Tip:

To avoid the vadas from disintegrating, combine the ingredients just before deep-frying and ensure that the oil is hot enough.

22,000 displaced by Myanmar unrest: UN

by
YANGON: More than 22,000 people from mainly Muslim communities have been displaced by fresh unrest in western Myanmar that has killed dozens and seen whole neighbourhoods razed, the UN said Sunday.

The United Nations chief in Yangon, Ashok Nigam, said government estimates provided early Sunday were that 22,587 people had been displaced and 4,665 houses were set ablaze in a new wave of communal unrest that swept Rakhine state this week.

"We have to say that this is a current estimate and we suspect there may be additional numbers," he told AFP, adding that 21,700 of those made homeless were Muslims.

"Those 22,000 people are still in the locality where they were, they are not moving. The boat people are separate," he told AFP, referring to thousands of additional displaced people who have surged towards the state capital Sittwe.

Seething resentment between Buddhists and Muslims erupted on October 21 in fresh violence in the state, following fierce clashes in June that left 75,000 mainly Muslim minority Rohingya seeking shelter in temporary camps.

The latest fighting, which has prompted international warnings that the nation's reforms could be under threat, has killed more than 80 people, according to a government official who asked to remain anonymous, bringing the total toll since June to above 170.
